Guardiola defends faltering City stars in 2-0 defeat to Spurs

Pep Guardiola, Man City, Tottenham

Pep Guardiola said it would be an “incredible mistake” to criticise his Manchester City players after they played “really well” in a 2-0 Premier League defeat at Tottenham.

Champions City remain a mammoth 22 points behind runaway leaders Liverpool after second-half goals from Steven Bergwijn and Son Heung-min boosted Spurs’ bid for a top-four finish.

Oleksandr Zinchenko was sent off for a second bookable offence before debutant Bergwijn opened the scoring at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Ilkay Gundogan had a first-half penalty saved by Hugo Lloris as misfiring City fired another blank four days after a 1-0 derby defeat to Manchester United in the second leg of their EFL Cup semi-final.

Guardiola kept his players in the dressing longer than usual after their loss in North London, but the City boss revealed he had been talking to his staff and wife rather than reading the riot act.

“On this performance, how should I be critical?” The Spaniard, who was unable to give a diagnosis of an injury obtained by Raheem Sterling, told Sky Sports. “On this performance, it would be an incredible mistake to say how bad they are.

“We created chances and conceded few. I always feel good football is when you create more chances than the opposite team. I always believe in this concept, you are close to winning the games.”

The former Barcelona coach added: “We played good but lost the game. It happened again. They had two shots and scored two goals. I don’t have too many things to say about the performance.

“It happened before, against United. They created I don’t know how many chances, only a few, we had a lot and didn’t score. We have to accept it and analyse it, sometimes it is not easy. We did really well, honestly.”

Guardiola pointed to the dismissal of Zinchenko as being a pivotal moment.

“The sending off was a key point, having 10 and 11 is completely different. We said at half-time be careful.”

Pogba steps up injury comeback for Man United

Paul Pogba has had his ankle cast removed as he steps up his attempt to return from injury for Manchester United. The France international has only started one Premier League match since August in a campaign heavily interrupted by his fitness woes. United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was unable to put a timescale on Pogba’s return to action ahead of Wednesday’s derby against Manchester City in the EFL Cup. But Solskjaer reported Pogba has made a key step in his recovery following surgery, as has fellow midfielder Scott McTominay, who is no longer wearing a knee brace. “It’s hard to put timescales on long-term injuries because they also need the training before [being] injury-free and need to be fitter,” Solskjaer told reporters. “Paul’s had his cast off and Scott took his brace off so at least they can now start doing some work on the grass.” Reports have suggested Pogba and McTominay are both targeting injury returns after the mid-season break, with United to play Chelsea on February 17 ...

Plane crash ‘killed a lot US service members’ – Taliban claims responsibility

Taliban has claimed responsibility for the Monday  plane crash , saying it was a US forces aircraft. The plane went down in an area controlled largely by the Taliban in eastern Afghanistan. Taliban spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid claimed the crash killed “lots” of US service members, according to Al Jazeera. “An aircraft of American occupiers has crashed in Ghazni province,” Mujahid said in a statement in the Pashto language, adding that all crew members onboard were killed. The Taliban statement on Monday came hours after reports suggested the plane was from state-owned Ariana Afghan Airlines. However, the Afghanistan airline said the rumours were “not true,” adding that “All the flights of Ariana Afghan Airlines have been completed normally,” read a statement on the carrier’s verified Facebook page. The Civil Aviation Authority of Afghanistan also denied reports that the plane was the country’s commercial flight. “According to our information … no commercial airline crash has been ...
